Typhlomyrmex

is a small genus of blind, subterranean ants found in the Neotropics. Although not readily apparent from their appearance, these insects are relatives of the big, surface-foraging Ectatomma and Gnamptogenys. Little is known of their biology.

Typhlomyrmex sp.
One of the rarest ants in the United States is this Typhlomyrmex. This individual was seen and photographed by Alex Wild in the mountains of southern Arizona in 2005, but has not been collected elsewhere.
