Agalychnis tree frogs are camouflaged green and nearly invisible during the day, but at night they can be seen hunting in the forest.

Photographed along a trail at Caves Branch Lodge.
A Belizean grasshopper photographed at night at Caves Branch Lodge. The BugShot workshop will teach how to compose & light this type of micro-portrait.
Perhaps the most widely recognized of all Neotropical insects is the spectacular Morpho. This individual was photographed at the Green Hills Butterfly Ranch, Belize's largest butterfly volarium. If you have trouble shooting a Morpho in the wild (I certainly did) you'll be sure to get a photo during our visit to Green Hills.
A colorful Hegemona darlkling beetle photographed in the studio. We will demonstrate how to build a whitebox mini-studio for these simple compositions, and we will have several whiteboxes available to you throughout the course.
The Greta oto glass-winged butterfly is among the many species you'll see both outside and in the Green Hills butterfly ranch.
The karst limestone formations of the region mean a distinctly craggy topography and endless caves, some of which we'll visit to photograph unique cave invertebrates.

This is the view from a Caves Branch Tree House at dusk.
Even though we'll be staying in the forest we won't be roughing it! The main lodge building behind the pool is where we'll be taking our meals.

Incidentally, the pool serves as a giant pan trap, so insects can be found floating on the water in the mornings. The pool maintenance crew gifted us several interesting subjects during our preliminary stay.
One of the bungalows where we'll be staying during the course. The accomodations are private, clean and comfortable, while the screened walls retain the feel and sound of living in the jungle. At night you'll hear frogs, crickets, katydids, and howler monkeys.
Cecropia trumpet trees are common along roadsides and disturbed habitats in Belize. Their stems house colonies of fierce Azteca ants that protect the tree in exchange for room & board.
