Fall foragers return to the hive.

A worker honey bee, Apis mellifera. The relative hairiness of bees helps them to collect pollen and to regulate their body temperature.

On a busy afternoon foragers come and go from the hive.

A honey bee gathers nectar from yellow sweet clover Melilotus officinalis.

Apis is not the only honey-making bee. In the new world tropics, colonies of jataí stingless bees (Tetragonisca angustula) are commonly kept for small-scale honey production. Jataí honey is relatively thin, but it fetches a higher market price for its purportedly greater medicinal value.
