Nylanderia
is a genus of small formicine ants with a worldwide distribution. Most species are generalist foragers that nest opportunistically in soil, leaf litter, and rotting wood. Human commerce has spread several pest species around the globe.
Nylanderia phantasma is a delicate ant found only on sand ridges in central Florida. This species is small, the color of sand, and active at night, appearing as ghostly forms gliding nearly imperceptibly among the sand grains.
