Iridomyrmex
is a diverse group of Indo-Australian dolichoderine ants. These alert, aggressive insects can be abundant, particularly in open habitats, and they play ecologially important roles as predators, scavengers, and symbionts of honeydew-producing insects.
The scientific name of Australian meat ants is Iridomyrmex, or "rainbow ants", referring to their blue-green iridescent sheen. (Iridomyrmex purpureus).
