Iridomyrmex
is a diverse group of Indo-Australian dolichoderine ants. These alert, aggressive insects can be abundant, particularly in open habitats, and they play ecologially important roles as predators, scavengers, and symbionts of honeydew-producing insects.
Iridomyrmex alpinus is perhaps the most abundant ant at higher elevations in the Australian alps.
