The wayward southern continent of Australia is famous for the strange and relictual creatures that have evolved in nearly complete isolation. The ants are no exception. Australia's ant fauna is both diverse and exceptionally abundant, with a host of species found nowhere else.

The farm town of Poochera, Australia (population 24) is perhaps the only place in the world with ant-based tourism. The dinosaur ant Nothomyrmecia macrops was rediscovered here in the 1970s, and the area still attracts myrmecologists. The town has stenciled ants in various places along the public streets.
